The app itself is a small download. The built-in model is fetched separately on first run — about 2.5 GB for the recommended one. On Pro you can point jhint at your own provider instead and download nothing.

Memory for the built-in model
About 4 GB free while it answers — that is the recommended model (2.5 GB download). The larger one wants about 7.5 GB and suits machines with 16 GB or more. With your own provider (Pro) none of this applies.

Graphics — for the built-in model
A discrete graphics card. Without one jhint does not offer the built-in model at all: on the machine we measured, a discrete card wrote about 79 tokens a second and the processor alone 14, which is slower than a conversation moves. Everything else works — you answer through your own provider, or a model you run in Ollama or LM Studio.
Memory for the built-in model
8 GB of RAM is the floor for the recommended model, 16 GB for the larger one. The model wants that memory free while it answers — 4 GB and 7.5 GB respectively, with 2 GB left to the system.
Disk space
About 3 GB for a typical set: the app is 305 MB, speech recognition 147 MB or 465 MB, and the answer model 2.5 GB.

Installing

  1. 1. Open the disk image and drag jhint into Applications.
  2. 2. Launch it. jhint lives in the menu bar, not in the Dock.
  3. 3. Grant screen recording permission — macOS uses it for system audio, which is what jhint listens to. The microphone is not used.
  1. 1. Run the installer. Windows blocks it with a blue full-screen warning, because this build is not signed with a code-signing certificate yet. Open the extra details the warning offers — that reveals the button that runs it anyway. Why Windows warns about jhint →
  2. 2. It installs into your own user folder and never asks for administrator rights.
  3. 3. Launch jhint. It listens to the audio your computer plays — the other side of the call, not your microphone. Windows is not asked for any permission.
